2021 LONG SNAPPER RECRUITS
How are 2021 long snapper recruits graded at College Football Today?
Punts
(PSL) + (PSS) + (PST) + (CR) = (PS)
- Punt Snap Location (PSL) - This could also be referred to as snap accuracy, but each punter prefers the ball snapped in various locations to perform their maximal efforts on punt operation.
- Punt Snap Speed (PSS) - how fast the football is snapped to the punters hands. (.6-.7 tenths of a second is considered NFL caliber)
- Punt Snap Technique (PST) - proper follow through with LS hands & hip thrust. (looking for a catch-able ball with a spiral)
- Coverage Reliability (CR) - Does LS recruit have the ability to get downfield to make tackles.
Field Goals
(FSL) + (FSS) + (FST) = (FGS)
- FG Snap Location (FSL) - Does the holder have to adjust to poor accuracy? Is the ball placed directly over the tee and does holder have to turn the laces. (Typically, Mike Webster would get perfect laces at 7 1/2 rotations of the football)
- FG Snap Speed (FSS) - How quickly does football get back to the placeholders hands. (typically, anywhere from .25-.35 snapped accurately will create a sound FG operation)
- FG Snap Technique (FST) - Proper follow through with LS hands & hip thrust. (looking for spiral with no wobble)

When it comes to top long snappers, NFL Hall of Fame Center Mike Webster set the standard for what is expected in the National Football League. He studied the art of long snapping intuitively and could get the laces facing out consistently on FG snaps. The game has evolved at the long snapper position, but we must always remember the legends of our game and how they paved the way for future generations. Mike was arguably one of the toughest players ever to play the game of American football and the physicality, attention to detail and tenacity he brought to the Steelers is still unparalleled to this day. There will never be another Mike Webster, so just try and get close to what many think is the greatest Pittsburgh Steeler of All-Time. R.I.P - Webster was my father Dave Trout's long snapper in 81' & they were the only two original Steelers to play during the 1987 NFL lockout (strike).
